The Curriculum for the Full-time Professional Master Degree in Physical Education

I. Educational Objectives

We aim to cultivate a large group of high-level application-oriented physical education and sports professionals, who are equipped with solid basic theory and broad professional knowledge, strong abilities to solve practical problems, and are able to independently undertake professional sports or managerial work. Specific requirements are:

1.Being equipped with basic theories of Marxism and qualified professional ethics and quality; taking an initiative part in the service of socialist modernization construction; contributing to the development of sports undertakings.

2. Being equipped with a system of professional knowledge, and the practical working ability in physical education,sport training, sport competition organization,and social sports instruction.

3. Mastering a foreign language to communicate internationally within the professional field.

II.Entry Requirements

Bachelor degree (or equivalent) within national education series.

III.Schooling Mode and Length of schooling

Schooling Mode: full-time; Length of schooling: 2 years.

IV.Cultivating Mode

The cultivating mode combines theoretical knowledge and application ability, humanistic spirit and scientific spirit, professional quality and overall quality.

Courses are in the forms of lectures, case studies, practice. Practice is stressed, and a variety of teaching practice and topic lectures are arranged.

Tutor-responsible system: The students are instructed by both intramural and extramural academic tutors, with intramural tutors playing the leading role. We also employ many rich-experienced PE teachers, coaches, administrators to guide and engage in practice process, academic research and paper writing, and to highlight the improvement of professional skills and comprehensive quality.

VCurriculum

With the credit system, each student must take at least 36 credits, including general courses, major core courses, selective courses and teaching practice courses. Through these courses, the students can be competent in teaching physical education and sports training, working at sport competition organization and being social sports instruction, etc.

General courses are compulsory, including Dialectics of Nature, Logic, Foreign Languages and Computer.

Major core courses are compulsory within professional fields. Each student has to choose less than 4-5 courses, and 3 credits of each course. Through these courses, students will improve their theoretical level and practical ability.

Selective courses can be chosen by students of different majors. It will develop their own personality, and will further enhance the professional knowledge and skills in a specific field.

1. General Courses (10 credits)

(1) Dialectics of Nature (2 credits)

(2)Logic (2 credits)

(3)Foreign Languages (2 credits, including professional English)

(4) Computer (2 credits)

2. Major Core Courses (12-15 credits)

(1) Physical Education Core Courses

Introduction of physical Education, Physical Education Teaching Materials and Methods, Principle of Motor Skill Learning, Fitness Evaluation and Methods, Sports Psychology Theory and Methods.

(2) Sport Training Core Courses

Sports Training Theory and Method, Sport Psychology Theory and Application, Scientific Monitoring of Sport Training,Sports Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation, Physical Training Theory and Method

(3) Selective Courses (6 credits)

The optional courses have 9 alternative courses, including Sports Competition, Event-group Training Theory, Physique Dance, Outdoor Adventure Sports, Leisure Sport, Medical Monitoring, Sports Measurement and Evaluation, Method of Sport Science Research,Sports Statistics and SPSS, and 2 credits per course.

(4) Teaching Practice (8 credits)

Sports professional master degree is a kind of professional degree with particular sport profession background; it requires the postgraduates should have a strong practical abilities. Therefore practice plays a special part in the cultivation procedure and teaching practice bases should be established. Teaching practice courses include educational practice, educational probation, microteaching, educational survey, typical case studies of curriculum, and so on. The students can participate in practice in forms of centralized practice and decentralized practice; with the practice time no less than 1 year and centralized teaching practice no less than six months. At the end of the practice, every student should write a practice report, and they can get credits after passing.

VI. Dissertation Writing and Degrees Granting

1. Students should start writing the dissertation after they get all the regulated credits.

2. The topic of the dissertation should be close to physical education, sports training, competition organization and management, as well as social sports introduction, being targeted, practical, and linking theory with practice.

3. Forms of the dissertation can be research reports, sports training plans and analysis, typical case analysis, and major sports events implementation schema.

4.The opening report should have been finished at early stage of the 3rd semester. The time interval between thesis proposal and thesis review is not less than 8 months. Opening report review will focus on students’ abilities to collect, organize, review capacity, as well as study design ability.

5. The students should give progress reports regularly to their tutors and modify their thesis with the guidance of their tutors. The number, form and scope of the reports is determined by the tutor group.

6.There is at least one expert outside of the school with rich practical experience in the thesis reviewers and oral defense committee.

7. The requirements for applying for the master degree: the scores of general courses and professional courses should be more than 76 points, elective courses scores above 60 points, teaching practice scores above76 points.

8. After finishing the courses and teaching practice, then obtaining the required credits, and passing the thesis defense, the students are awarded Physical Education professional master degree and the master's graduate diploma by the audit of CCNU Academic Degree Evaluation Committee.
