The Curriculum for Masters of Physical Education
Level-1 Discipline (0403)
I. Educational Objectives
We aim to cultivate talents of physical education with international view to meet the needs of national modernization construction. Postgraduates should have systematic and solid knowledge in physical education and sport science; master developmental theories in motor learning; be acquainted with a variety of sport skills. Also, they should understand the trend of future development in physical education; and be capable of doing research in physical education and relevant fields . After graduation, students can work at all kinds of schools, research institutions and other enterprises and institutions engaged in teaching, training, researching or management.

3. Physical Education and Training (040303).
(1) Theory and practice of physical education and training: it focuses on teaching and coaching sports, and learning theory and pedagogy related to the sports. The major sport events include track and field, basketball, football, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, tennis, gymnastics, aerobics, rhythmic gymnastics, athletics gymnastics, basic gymnastics, sports dance, etc.
(2) The theory and practice of national fitness.
(3) The general sports training.
4. Traditional Sports (040304).
(1) The martial arts culture and health-preservation culture studies
(2) Theory and practice of martial art teaching and training
III. Length of Years for Graduation and Credit Hour Requirement
The length of years for graduation is 3 years with maximum less than 4 years. In general, it will take first two years for course work and last year for dissertation. The total credits for the degree range from 36 to 38.
IV. Curriculum Set Up
Course work can be categorized into four levels: (1) general education courses, (2) Level-1 discipline required courses, (3) Level-2 discipline required courses, and (4) selective courses. The Specific courses, credits and concise teaching outline are shown in Appendix 1 and 2.
V. The Practical Section
Practical section occupies 4 points, including teaching practice and academic activities, with 2 credits each.
1. Practical teaching is generally arranged in the second academic year. Types of the practice are varied, such as teaching major courses, assisting teachers to answer students questions, organize class discussions, conduct physical training sessions, check students’ homework, etc. Detail information can be found at “CCNU Postgraduates Teaching Practice Review”. If the students have had three-year related working experience in teaching, they can be exempted from the teaching practice.
2. Postgraduates must participate in academic activities of physical education and sports science (e.g. academic lectures, academic reports, academic conferences, etc.) for more than 8 times, and one of them must be the academic activities off campus. After the academic activities, students should fill in the “CCNU Postgraduates Academic Activities Review”, which should be assessed by their tutors.
After the practical activities, tutors and the tutor group evaluate students’ performance. These two items above will be turn in to the graduate office before the dissertation. If unqualified, the students will not be allowed to go to dissertation defense.
VI. Research
During the school years,students should be actively involved in the research and work closely with tutors and advisors. Within the three years, they must complete at least 1 course paper and 1 postgraduate degree paper. If they would like to apply for graduation in advance, they must publish 1 professional academic thesis with a signed unit as CCNU. The journal should be in the category of CSSCI or Science and Technology of China or high impact journals.
VII. Dissertation
1. Dissertation-related work is an important part of postgraduate cultivation, reflecting the candidates’ research and innovation ability. Dissertation-writing work should start as early as possible and last for at least 1 year.
2. Postgraduates should determine their dissertation topic, pass opening report and formulate dissertation-writing plan no later than the end of the fourth semester. Dissertation opening report include: research and writing purposes, research methods, research ideas, content framework, writing plan, core ideas, innovative ideas and related literature.
3.Students should report regularly to the tutor and guidance group during the process of dissertation writing to ensure the correctness of the structure, ideas and perspectives. The dissertation topic should be in the mainstream and at the cutting edge. The research results should be innovative and unique and the language should be fluent with logical and rigorous reasoning.
4. Approved by the tutor, the guidance group and the school office, qualified students may apply for formal dissertation defense. Dissertation review must be given before dissertation defense, and the review shall evaluate the topic, structure, viewpoint, reasoning, method and practical value of the dissertation. The dissertation defense work shall be carried out in accordance with related regulations of CCNU.
VIII. Cultivating Program
1.The method of Postgraduates’ cultivation is a combination of tutor instruction and collective instruction of professional guidance group.
2. Teaching methods should be flexible in consistent with individual needs, environment, and expectations.
3. Tutors should focus on teaching and cultivating and fully mobilizing postgraduates’ initiative and consciousness in study and research.
4. Tutor and tutor group should actively create favorable conditions for students to participate in seminars, academic lectures and social practices to strengthen their capacity in research, self-learning, operation, language and writing skills.
5. Textbooks and reference books should reflect the advanced level at home and abroad. Being recommended by Teaching and Researching Office, teachers of non-degree courses should have associate professors title or doctoral degree and be approved by mentor group and Postgraduate Management Department.

X. Other Regulations
In accordance with the cultivating program, each postgraduate is required to formulate a Personal Cultivating (learning) Program in the Postgraduate Education Management System within 6 weeks after enrollment under the guidance of instructors and complete the "Online Course Selection" each semester. The Personal Training (learning) Program, being reviewed by tutors and the head of professional guidance group, should be sent to Postgraduate Office in quadruplicate to stamp for record.
Introductions:
1. 3-5 of Level-1 required courses should be offered, including a course related to research methods. No less than 3 courses, with 9 credits.
2.4-5 of Level-2 required courses should be offered, with 8-10 credits.
3. Selective class should be offering no less than 3, with 8-10 credits.
